Community Literacy Club's Adaptive Tennis & Learning Program

Adaptive Tennis & Learning

Every Ability. Every Opportunity. Every Child. Building confidence, connections, and life skills through tennis, literacy, and play.

At Community Literacy Club, we believe every child deserves a place to play, learn, grow, and belong.

Our Adaptive Tennis & Learning Program creates inclusive opportunities for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and social, emotional, and recovery-related support needs (SER).

By combining adaptive tennis instruction, educational enrichment, and social-emotional learning, we help participants develop new skills, build meaningful relationships, and gain confidence in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Our approach

Two Areas of Focus. One Inclusive Community.

Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD)

Learning at Every Ability Level

Our IDD programming supports children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities through structured, engaging, and adaptable activities. Tennis instruction and educational experiences are modified to accommodate different learning styles, communication needs, and developmental abilities.

Participants have opportunities to strengthen:

  • Motor skills, balance, and coordination
  • Communication and social interaction
  • Attention, focus, and following directions
  • Confidence and independence
  • Problem-solving and decision-making
  • Teamwork and positive peer relationships

Every participant progresses at their own pace, and every achievement matters.

Social, Emotional & Recovery (SER)

Building Resilience Through Play

Our SER programming uses tennis, movement, and educational enrichment to support young people experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges, including those who may benefit from recovery-oriented support. Through positive relationships, structured activities, and supportive coaching, participants practice:

  • Emotional awareness and self-regulation
  • Healthy coping strategies
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Positive communication
  • Conflict resolution
  • Resilience and perseverance
  • Trust, teamwork, and relationship-building

Our approach emphasizes encouragement, consistency, and connection, helping participants develop skills they can carry into everyday life.

Our model

More Than a Game

Our Adaptive Tennis & Learning model combines four essential elements:

Adaptive Tennis

Modified instruction, equipment, and games that make tennis accessible, engaging, and enjoyable.

Literacy & Learning

Reading, storytelling, communication, and problem-solving activities that encourage curiosity and self-expression.

Social-Emotional Development

Opportunities to practice emotional regulation, cooperation, confidence, and positive decision-making.

Community & Connection

A supportive environment where participants build friendships, experience belonging, and celebrate their progress.

Our philosophy

Every Child Deserves a Chance to Thrive

Success looks different for every participant.

For one child, success might mean making contact with a tennis ball for the first time. For another, it may mean communicating with a teammate, managing frustration, following a new routine, or developing the confidence to try something unfamiliar.

We recognize that these moments are more than milestones in sports. They represent meaningful steps toward greater independence, connection, and personal growth.

We celebrate progress, not perfection.
